pwck(ADM)
pwck --
check password file
Syntax
/etc/pwck [ file ]
Description
pwck
scans the password file and checks for any inconsistencies.
The checks include validation of the number of fields,
login name, user ID, group ID,
and whether the login directory and optional program name exist.
The default password file is /etc/passwd; see
passwd(F)
for details of its format.
Lines in /etc/passwd that begin with ``+'' or
``-'' are entries used by the Network Information
Service (NIS). These entries are not required to specify
a home directory or program shell, however,
pwck checks them if present. pwck also
requires that a given username contain no more than
eight alphanumeric characters. pwck does not check the
validity of network group names (netgrp).
