DEC AS800 fan

Hello,

Does anybody knows what is the CPU fan specification, pinout and requirements for an DEC Alpha Server 800?

Seems it uses some special fan because the same type of PC fans does not work even if the connector is the same.

...actually, this question is directed to MikeR, but it would be useful to share this information with everybody.

Just starting the weekend, and catching up;
Unfortunately will not be at work till Tues-Wed, but I'll try to look it up.
Have you checked the P.S? Perhaps the 12V is out (IIRC the fan runs on 12V -- it should say on the fan) ... Or try feeding the fan (momentarily) from another P.S.
Is there a little thermistor on the fan to control it's speed? If there is you could try shorting it out to get the fan working at full speed

Also, I think an ordinary PC fan _should_ work - Im almost sure they work on an Alphaserver 2xx/3xx/4xx -- grab a AVOmeter!

If miker knows what voltage each pin on the connector should give you could check with a multimeter (if you have one!).

But then again I guess miker is more like a software guy than a hardware one. (correct me if I guessed wrong)

Well, it looked quite easy, but seems it is more challenging to find a replacement for this fan...

Actually, while writing this I got an idea.
I opened the fan and dropped some paraffin drops... that made the fan moving again.

After shabath I will install into the box and we'll see the result.

haha... this AS800 gives up slowly.

Here is the update:

Not it stopped and can not start.
It beeps 1-2-4 what means:

Code: Select all

1-2-4 Backup cache error. Replace the CPU daughter board
(Chapter 7).
The system can be operated with
the B-cache disabled until a
replacement CPU daughter board is
available. Bank 1 of the J1 jumper
on the CPU daughter board is used
to disable the B-cache. Refer to
Appendix A.

I'll try to do it during the weekend.
