What does everyone think would be the best choice of OS for the next polarhome host running on an i686?

As I've said before, I'd vote for Ubuntu but since it's very similar to Debian (which is already a Polarhome OS), I believed Suse is the best option.

Especially now that it is closer to the spirit of Polarhome (open source, etc).

AFAIK suse is being set up by zoliman, or atleast it was in his agenda not too long ago.

if you're up for setting a host, make it something unique. like gentoo or slackware.

I am downloading a set of Slackware 10.2 CDs. I have always heard good things about it.

Slackware was alright, but it I didn't really like it.

It is different then any Linux distro that I have used. Its runlevels are based on System V instead of BSD unlike most Linux. It doesnt even have chkconfig. Maybe it works for some people, but not me. I am now downloading SuSE 10. It is 5 CDs, so it could be a while. BitTorrent is only downloading at 20KB/s. I'm still waiting to hear form zoli to see what distro he suggests.

hi,

anything is fine for me so far you are familiar and comfortable with it - and can provide support for longer time period.

My personal opinion is: Linux is simple and affordable to everybody. I would (personally) prefer a more exotic choice. Some RiscOS, Mac OSX etc.

We might ask polarhome users/visitors opinion.

Zoli, yes Linux is affordable to everyone, including myself. That is basicly why I use it over anything else. I would go for a more exotic OS as long as it is free and will run on an i686. Also, are you setting up SuSE? If not, maybe that would be a good choice.
Afonic, yes, I am downloading the Open Source one.
EDIT: What about OpenBSD

sure, suse is fine. I planned to set a suse server - but haven't got enough time to do it.
From other side - as I told you, I prefer more exotic ones - therfore I would rather put my time to set up plan9 therefore there were no progress on suse front.

Suse is yours if you would like to drive a server.
Once it is up and you feel that is is OK, please send me the root and mysql password in order to connect it to polarhome. (later on you may change the root password)
