Template accounts

2005.08.01 polarhome has new user policy. ftp accounts are (will be) revoked and just template and shell accounts exist. This policy modification was needed in order to protect polarhome from users that use their ftp accounts for phishing, spoofing, distribute warez, running pirate forums and other malitious activity. ftp users can continue to use polarhome until 2005.10.31. After that date ftp access will be denied. Soon more information will be sent out.

Opinions, suggestions..?

I made first steps:
- template account creation is open
- newly created accounts do not have ftp acccess

TODO:
-write a warning and official sorry letter with detailed explanation
- wait three months
- during this tree months pay extra attencion on phishing like abuse
- when the time is up deny ftp access for all ftp accounts
- move ftp account web space to not reachable location

On the user policy page it seems that template accounts will be allowed MySQL and phpMyAdmin.




Also, what should disk quota be for email-only users? Same as before?

hi,

yes.. I am aware of it.
I would like to create as functional teplate accounts as possible, to avoid exrta work later on.

- phpMyAdmin is harmless if database quota works (and it does)
- mail quoata is same as ealier
- usermin is also harmless without uploading feature

From what I understand, even if your files remain in place under your template account you will, in a month's time, be unable to access them.

If you *really* need access to your files on polarhome I suggest:
1. Download all files to your own computer (you should do that anyway, as backup, if your files are important to you.)
2.a. Upgrade your FTP account (which will soon be an email-only template account) to a shell account. That way you will keep your account name.
OR
2.b. Transfer your files to a different hosting provider.

hi,

your current accout will be autmatically fall back to template "status" in November. Your files will be kept for some time moreover, but will not be accessable any more. You keep you username until you account exists.
