Socket programming

I'm learning Unix socket programming and i want to test my
servers an dclients. May i run a test server on FreeBSD Server
or not ? I want also run some proxy scanners and many
other socket programms.

Provided you dont break the rules + the server isnt restricted against your needs then polarhome is for learning and freedom.

Only thing im thinking though is that freebsd is crowded with lots of active users and is very slow currently.

Dont you have an old spare pc at home to try it with? Thats how i learn more important things because it means you dont need to be online and contend with other users for resources.

I dont know about the FreeBSD server (where the usable ports are listed as 10000 - 14999.)
I have tried a small socket-programming example on Alpha OpenVMS, where the ports are 3000 - 3999, and it works. (Try http://www.polarhome.com:763/~miker/qotd.php)

Remember to check carefully that the port you are planning to use is not already in use (though, offhand, I cannot recall any well-known ports in the over-10,000 range...)

yes, it is allowed until you use your porgrams without damaging polarhome or somebody else.

... actually all port are allowed for outbound access, but just dedicated ports are allowed for inbound access (because of single IP address the port range is splitted between polarhome hosts)
