It says no mulitimeda files sharing or something like that in the rules on the front page... and I can understand that. But can I run a Direct Connect server on any of the machines? No files are stored, it's just used to connect people together and it uses up very little bandwidth...

A file sharing server can be a quite ilegal thing (since we all know what DC is all about). :roll:

Not quite.
let's use math on this one;
A server with 5000 users, needs 100mbit link to stay 'usable'.
now, polarhome has an 1mbit upstream link. which means that if the line was in perfect idle condition, you could run a maximum of 50 users. but since that's hardly true and the most you'll find availible at any given time is about 10kBps, you can run a server with 5~ or so users.

So, having that said, why would anyone want to run a file sharing server with 5 users?
just use ftp...

where did you get those values from? that 5000 dc users need 100mbit bandwidth?

The use of bandwidth is more or less the same as in irc... or even less

but I'll check the exact numbers...

Anyway, this server would be for about 50 people... just a group from my University

and at one time probably there would be only about 20 users...

About ftp... I can't use my own computer as a server because I pay my ISP for the transmitted data...
And I don't think anyone will give me access to a ftp with a few gigabytes of free space

Bandwith fees pervent you from using FTP. That's ok. But what pervents you from running your DC server on your machine?

I should have mentioned this earlier...

At home I have only an analog 56kbps modem, connected to my telephone line...

I pay only for data, but still, I can't use my phone when I'm connected

Try entering a 5000+ user server with less than a 100mbit connection.
Maybe the terrorism-equivilant lag won't be visible on your 56k, but on broadband it most certainly is.
and trust me, it isn't pleasant.

500ms lag at the very best, and that's with 3~5 people.

bottom line;
if you don't mind the extreme lags, go ahead and install a DC server. no one will tell you a thing.

Bad example. Ferraris are quite racionable. They use like 10 to 15 l/100km. :lol:
