SOCKS proxy for connection relay?

Greetings folks. I'm hoping that someone out there can give me a solution to this really, REALLY pesky problem I've been putting up with recently.

For some reason, from my home PCs, I get "Software caused connection abort" errors on virtually every IRC network I try to connect to. There are a couple that work just fine, but mostly, I'm unable to use local clients to do any IRCing. I've spend hours researching and doing troubleshooting, trying to track down the error. I haven't had any success yet.(I've gotten a shell on a coworker's box for irssi access as a work around)

I am wondering if there are any properly secured SOCKS proxies running on the Polarhome network. I'd Really love to be able to use a local IRC client again, and if I can piggyback off a proxy, perhaps this stupid error will be prevented. I understand there's a lot of ne'er-do-wells out there looking for proxies to exploit, so let me reassure that I'm only looking for the proxy to work around this maddening connection problem.

SOCKS proxies are not public any more. They had been closed because of heavy remote abuse.

I remember the problems they caused.

You might be better using a BNC on your coworkers box and connect using that.

Could anyone provide some links on BNC installation?
They are also called Bouncers, right?
Can they be properly configured with strong user authentication? I don't want to ask my coworker to put anything on that could be abused or cracked into easily.

If I could get him some URLs or some HOWTOs, that'd be lovely!

PsyBNC is the most common one. You can get it working with UNIX and Windows.

Stick with a psyBNC.

Installed nicely on a *nix box.

You dictate username, password, ip range(if you want) and it connects to your IRC server 24/7.

You connect to it (similar to your SSH connection to your coworkers irssi) using your irc client and chat through it.

Concearning proxies... Has the open proxy problem been fixed, cos the bncs cannot connect to q-net? :\

Try asking support@polarhome.com and include your logs.

I will also try connecting a shell to my private irc network which has bopm blitzed open proxy database lists to see if it bans.
