February 16 is and always will be a significant and meaningful date for Lithuanians …
it is on this day in 1918 that Lithuania declared its independence
from czarist Russia. For decades, Lithuanian have been commemorating
this event, during Lithuania’s independence, oppression, and subsequent independence.
In the wake of Lithuania re-declaring its sovereignty March 11, 1990.
@Afonic ( Greece )
After nearly 400 years of rule by the Ottomans, Greece declared its independence on March 25, 1821.
Long before that, ancient Athenians created a Greek culture that valued human
liberty and dignity, and modern Greeks have demonstrated that preserving freedom
is a powerful motivating force. Today, on Greek Independence Day, we recognize the
ancient Greek influence in framing our own Constitution and celebrate the Greek-American
heritage that continues to strengthen our communities and enrich our society.
Matej ( Slovenia )
It is believed that the Slavic ancestors of the present-day Slovenians settled in the area
in the 6th century. In the 7th century the Slavic Duchy of Carantania, the first
Slovenian and first stable Slavic state, was formed. In 745, Karantania lost its
independence and became to all intents and purposes a part of the Frankish empire.
Many Slavs gradually became converted to Christianity.
Present-day Slovenia was formed on 25 June 1991 upon its independence from the Yugoslavia.
