HP-UX/IA64 server down

Postby fedkad_hpux-ia64 » Sun May 21, 2017 2:48 pm

It looks like HP-UX/IA64 server is down since Friday May the 19th. Is there some kind of maintenance or hardware/software problem?

Unfortunately, it is not a maintenance.

The server room is too hot for Itanium servers during the summer.
Both IA64 servers (hpux and openvms) are down for few months.

Luckily the Swedish summer is relatively short and I expect the servers to be online again in September.

This happens every year. I am sorry.

Please, before you start drawing conclusion about the non professional approach - the whole polarhome is installed behind a 10A fuse. We're running at almost 10A whole year. There is no possibility to install an AC cooler without moving to some server room.
Because of the same reason we cannot appreciate one extra hypervisor either.

Please send me a mail and I'll arrange you accounts on some other hosts during this IA64 summer downtime.

I am sorry.
Regards,
Z

No need for apologies, Zoli. We're grateful for everything you put into Polarhome.

I'm surprised to hear Sweden ever gets so warm. ;)

I hope it stays cool enough for Alpha.

Everywhere in the World would get too warm if in the less the 10sqm room some behemot uses 10A constantly.
I would say we can thank cold the Swedish weather that this site is online at all.

Itanium/HP integrity servers are expecially sensitive. They simply shut down when the tempersture is above 40 defree celsius - can't do anything with them.

The alpha and the other servers are much more tolerant.

I guess HP is trying to sell air conditioners.

I brought it up... seems is works... but no promises.
It depends on the weather - but please do not pray for more rain in Sweden because of this server :)

I am very sorry... but integrity servers do not stand the 40+ celsius degree ambient temperature.
In September usually the IA64 servers are back again

Hello Zoli,

I have a shell account only on the Integrity HP-UX server. I think, the availability of the PA-RISC HP-UX server is much higher compared to the Integrity server.

Can I move my account from Integrity to PA-RISC?

Sure.
Please, create your account on the PA-RISC server and let me know.
I'll activate your account ASAP.

I created a user called "fedkad" for hpux.polarhome.com (PA-RISC). Please activate it. The user in Itanium server can be deleted together with its data (home directory).

Thank you again.

I am sorry, but the servers with Itanium architecture cannot survive the Swedish summer in the poorly cooled server room, therefore every summer the OpenVMS and HPUX servers on Itanium are down in the period of jun-sept.
This was the case from the beginning.
I can help you with providing you an account on the alpha or vax architecture for OpenVMS and PA-RISC architecture for HPUX meanwhile.

Bringing these server to a well cooled server room would bring us some additional costs about 200EUR per month that nobody is ready to pay for.
I am sorry, but polarhome is a community site with AS-IS service level.
I am aware that this is not enough for professional use, but this can be expected from a free service.
Regards,
Z
