Hi. I haven`t been here for quite a time, but I thought I take a look around. So my problem is that I can`t login to my shell. Actually the shell was my brothers, but he gave it to me (he got tired of shell accounts). The user is 'halal' and it was an account on 'Debian'.
Do you any clue why can`t I login? Is it possible that the account exists no more? Please tell me what is the matter and tell me what can be done. THX!

Hi,
I am not the debian admin, so I cannot tell you much beside that the account does exist and is a shell account.

bash-2.04$ finger halal@debian
[debian.polarhome.com]
Login: halal Name: Biro Richard (heavymetal16@programozo.hu)

Last login Thu Oct 6 17:39 (CEST) on pts/3 from 85.186.61.217
No mail.
No Plan.

The only other thing I can say is to make sure you are connecting to the right ports. If you could give a specific error message, it would be helpful.

I haven`t logged in for so much time that I forgot the password. Damn it

So what do I have to do to prove that the account is mine and to get a new password?

I read the FAQ section about this and it says the following:

Please note, that support can and will change password just if you use registered e-mail address (shown by finger)

If I understood correctly then this means that an e-mail should be sent from my brothers e-mail account (Biro Richard heavymetal16@programozo.hu). That e-mail no longer exists. My brother, Richard, gave it up a long time ago.
Now what?

I forgot my password, but given e-mail is not valid... in that case your account is lost.... because ne password can be sent out just to relevant - given address shown in finger information

Yes, this is the general approach... but there is possibility to recover a lost account.

I do have original registartion form.

If you can quote, real name, address, age etc of original user proving that your are really his brother and meanwile I do not get any negative answer on letter sent to heavymetal16@programozo.hu - the account will be yours.

Hello,

this is described as example 2 in http://www.polarhome.com/service/ports.html

Example 2
We want to access from Internet POP3 service on vax.polarhome.com:
check the table above, if POP3 is available on VAX
POP3 is configured on vax.polarhome.com... looks good
service number for POP3 is 6
server number for vax.polarhome.com is 70
the correct acces port should be: 706 (according to the formula [server no][service no])
configure your mail client's pop3 server to mail.polarhome.com port 706
SMTP server should be mail.polarhome.com (on default port 25)
that's it.

... and of coure you need to use numbers for your host (freebsd)
