What's the problem in getting a simple server in ex. serverpronto.com and getting CPanel with a non-profit license? [it costs like 30$]

No problem, actually it's a good idea but is my use a non-profit one?
Actually I could get Plesk with $100 in the setup fee, but why do you say that serverpronto is better than 1and1? It has many less features for the same price. (I can't even see MySQL and PHP pre-installed)
Is the speed really good?

I mean for the packages on the top that are not really a server but is like you have one, with root access and Plesk. I know that T1 is not THAT fast but...

T1 = 1.53Mbit both ways ... thats roughly 180kb/s on a good day. Whereas a good server will be able to churn out +2048kb/s easily.

Well, I have a friend who rents a dedi and hes willing to offer the following;

x Gb space
Unlimited or as close to bandwidth. ( I push lots through it

)
Cpanel is installed so no sweat there.
Oh and I admin this box..

What currently do you get with your provider? ... space etc.

I don't need more than 2GB actually, all this 40GB and stuff are pretty useless for me.

What I need except what I stated above is many add-on domains (more than 10) so that I can point the DNS to that server's and host them.

I don't know, I have searched a lot and I am close to get the 1and1 offer, but I can't say that I am 100% satisfied as they do not say some things (like what ammount of speed do I have? They say they have a 15000Mbits network but what do I get?

Actually I think that I will find 3-4 options and let you guys vote!

Actually I am not lazy, I just don't know how to install all these crap! I fucked up an MySQL installation once, imagine all the rest!

Alos even if you set up the server, I have to find you to fix it! Managed servers, if the collapse, they fix it, not me! They also include control panels, firewalls, virus scans and DNS servers! I think I'll take it the easy way!

I'm afraid the hardware in that one is not good at all. Intel 1.7GHz?

Forget about 1and1 they are offering services only in US and Canada!!! I can't believe it! If you are in Europe they send you to a UK site where the prices are almost twice with 50GB tranfer!

If you go for ServerPronto make sure you dont have any problems. You need to pay for reboots, help tickets and other things. Id stay well clear of them.

Hostik look ok. Isnt that well out of your range? $103 a month?

S4U: free reboots within 15 mins which isnt bad. - Again having to pay for tickets.

For Hostik is a bit expensive, but the server's hardware is very very good. Also the bandwidth is OK.

That's why I want a managed server, I think it's bullshit having to pay for a simple back-up, or for a simple help email.

Look, denis you know everything about this shit! What I know is that I have a 10k visits/per day site and if I fuck something up, I will have to wait for them to fix it and also pay a fortune for them to do so. That's why I need a managed server and I am searching hard!

I am OK with something like a half-managed server, with a nice control panel and some kind of support. Completely unmanaged servers are no good, you have to admit it. I mean it just brokes up and you have to pay for back-up? It takes 10secs for someone to press the button and they want me to pay $10 for that? I don't think so...

Well true, but do you really excpect the server to be rebooted on daily basis?

some servers live for years without a single reboot, you know.. even polarhome servers survive a few months without reboots..

I agree. Anyway I am totally confused. I was 90% sure for 1&1 until I found out they allow only US and Canada customers. Now I really don't know what to go for.

Can you explain more about the Cpanel thing? I thought I should pay per month, can I get it for an one-time fee?

Hm they actually changed their licensing -thing, seems now that non profit licenses only go to U.S registred non-profit organizations.. darn..
