VMS file sharing

Postby papa » Mon Dec 14, 2015 1:11 am

I see in the manuals that VMS allows access to other nodes' file systems by referencing them as: host::device:[directory]filename.ext

Would it be possible to set up the three Polarhome OpenVMS boxes to access each other's files, like (from ALPHA):
Code: Select all
DIR VAX::DUA1:[HOME.P.PAPA]HELLO.*

All VMS servers has DECNET configured and the ubuntu.
(IA64 is online just on demand)

You can do on VAX, ALPHA and ubuntu too:
Code: Select all
Last login: Tue Nov 10 09:12:28 2015 from mail.polarhome.com
zoli@ubuntu:~$ sethost vax
sethost V1.0.4
Connecting to vax
Cterm connection. Escape Sequence  is ^]

Failure on the back translate address request

OpenVMS (TM) VAX Operating System, Version V7.3
VAX 4000-106A (KA56-A)

Great. I can connect back and forth between ALPHA and VAX with SET HOST ... .

But the help file says I should also be able to access files on other VMS nodes with DIRECTORY and other commands by using a filespec like the following, but the result on both ALPHA and VAX is the same.
Code: Select all
PAPA@alpha$ dir vax::dua1:[home.p.papa]hello.dir
%DIRECT-E-OPENIN, error opening VAX::DUA1:[HOME.P.PAPA]HELLO.DIR;* as input
-RMS-E-FND, ACP file or directory lookup failed
-SYSTEM-F-INVLOGIN, login information invalid at remote node

you still need to use your username and password... like:

dir vax"papa yourpassword"::dua1:[home.p.papa]hello.dir

That looks like the trick. And it works from VAX to itself. But ALPHA was rejecting my password again last night, and the log-in prompt won't even come up today. :(

You are right... there is still something wrong with that alpha server.
I upgraded the simulator and rebooted the box.
Well see soon how it behaves.
