UTF-8 for AIX7

I type a lot in languages like Romanian, Spanish and Gascon, languages that use extended versions of the Latin alphabet. Something scrambles characters like ç, ñ, â, à, etc., on my screen -- no matter if I use Linux, Solaris, PuTTY or Cygwin on Windows, or some Android application to SSH.
Interestingly, the scrambling is different if I use Vim, vi, nano or MC's internal editor.
Can it be a problem at the server's side?
How can this be corrected?

Hi,

I am sorry - I am not an expert in the field.
I guess you can override your LANG envirenmental variable with some UTF locale like:

export LANG=en_US.UTF-8

The command

Code: Select all

locale -a

shows that utf-8 is not installed on the AIX system. Here I found a web page that seems to explain how to install utf-8 on AIX: http://www.unix.com/aix/83622-setting-l ... f-8-a.html
Someone with admin privileges can do that. You have to tweak that with smitty. I tried to do it myself, without success.
Could anyone try to put utf-8 in the AIX system? Thanks.

I see... hmmm it will take me a while to find the AIX7 DVD, mount it etc.
If you have already tried then you must have bos.loc.utf.EN_US around.
Could you please put to your home directory and I will install it when you send me a note.

Sorry if I induced you into error. I don't have that file. I just tried to tweak the locale with smitty...
