FTP help!

ok im logging on to redhat.polarhome.com to try to upload my site thru SmartFTP and it never connects, iv tried numerous times, with pasv on and off and nothing happened.

You need to connect to ftp.polarhome.com port 21 and not redhat.polarhome.com

I wish once someone reads the page first and then ask!

It should be next to where you place the address in your FTP client, but you don't have to worry as 21 is the default port.

Theres frequent problems with people using the local addresses to connect and when having problems they dont think that by connecting to 192.168.x.x that thats actually local.

Knock yourself out... I dont think the ports were the problem ... it was the user using redhat.polarhome.com which resolves to the local ip as opposed to gate.polarhome.com.

Yeah I know what the problem was as I said to Gogen to change the address.

What I am saying is the need to make a "simple" ports table, which will be like:

FTP -> Use ftp.polarhome.com
XXX for Redhat
XXX for Debian etc

HTTP -> use www.polarhome.com:XXX/~username
XXX for Redhat...

This way the newbie users that don't know will find it much more easy to understand what to use, as they get confused with that local user, internet example etc things.

A much simpler table (for noobs at least) could have ONLY the columns headed "Service", "Server" and "Internet example.

Also the link on the main page to "Ports list" could go directly to the table, not to the top of the page (Or move the table to the top, with explanations below.)
