CHMod in PHP script?

I know it's possible to CHMod stuff within a PHP script, as I've done it before on my local host.

However I was wondering if it's not allowed on the FTP servers here?

I tried to use it in a script on my website and I believe it told me that I couldn't do that, so I wanted to make sure it's not allowed.

Is there any way to do this on the servers here?

We use SafeMode here, so no you can't chmod any files using php.
