Downloading to OpenVMS/VAX

Postby mcsuper5_vax » Fri Jan 01, 2021 9:41 am

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to get files to my default directory. I have a shell account.

I was able to ftp a few files from the guest account on the localhost, but I don't appear to be able to access other sites.

Curl and wget do not appear to be available. links and lynx do not appear to be available either. So I don't appear to be able to download from a web server.

scp and sftp both hang.

I wrote a couple of programs bin2hex.c for windows(mingw32) and hex2bin.c for the Vax; so I could convert to text on my windows machine and paste to putty like I was typing it in; but my connection was closed when pasting into the terminal. So, I'm guessing the terminal doesn't like a few thousand lines at a time.

Any suggestions on how to get executable files such as VIM.EXE;1 to my directory?

Hi,

both WGATE and LYNX are available as some other useful tool... but they are very old versions that might not cope with https and certificates.

Code: Select all
Directory DUA2:<000000.UTIL>

BZIP2.EXE;1         CHTEXT.EXE;1        DECODE_64.EXE;1     DEFINE_TOOLS.COM;19
DELTREE.EXE;1       DIFF.EXE;1          DX.EXE;1            DXHELP.HLB;1
FISH.EXE;1          GAWK.EXE;1          GLOBAL.IRCRC;1      GS.EXE;1
GUNZIP.EXE;1        GV.EXE;1            GZIP.EXE;1          IRC.EXE;1
IRCHELP.HLB;1       IRCHELP.HLP;1       IRCII.SERVERS;1     LIC.DIR;1
LYNX.CFG;1          LYNX.EXE;1          MAKE.EXE;1          MMK.EXE;1
MMK_DEFAULT_RULES.MMS;1                 MMK_DOC.TXT;1       MMK_HELP.HLP;1
MXRN.EXE;1          OPENSSL-100R.DIR;1  PATCH.EXE;1         PICO.EXE;1
PINE.EXE;1          SED.EXE;1           SED.HLP;1           TAR.EXE;1
UNZIP.EXE;1         UUDECODE.EXE;1      UUENCODE.EXE;1      VIM61.DIR;1
VIM62.DIR;1         VIM63.DIR;1         VIM70.DIR;1         VIM72.DIR;1
VIM73.DIR;1         VIM74.DIR;1         VIM81.DIR;1         VIM82.DIR;1
VMSTAR.EXE;1        WGET.EXE;1          ZCAT.EXE;1          ZIP.EXE;1

Total of 51 files.

The define tools should be loaded automatically, but if it failed, please run:
Code: Select all
SYSTEM@vax$ @DUA2:<UTIL>DEFINE_TOOLS.COM

%DCL-I-SUPERSEDE, previous value of PERLSHR has been superseded

The VIM problem has been solved in the earlier post.

Zoli,

Thanks, I appreciate the quick response. Unfortunately, @dua2:[util]define_tools.com fails indicating
insufficient privileges to execute perl_setup.com. I get this error when I log in; so I assume it is called by
SLOGIN.COM(?).

By copying the script to my home directory and commenting out the line for perl_setup.com, the rest of the
script executes.

My login.com also fails to execute. I'm not certain if you changed the default login script or if it doesn't
run as a consequence of SLOGIN.COM's call to define_tools not completing successfully.

I am able to execute vim after I run the script and can run wget and lynx.

In theory I should be able to get files to my machine from my primary shell using wget, lynx or ftp via my
primary site; however, I need to specify IP addresses.

wget -d http://www.google.com/
shows:
pathconf: No such file or directory
pathconf: No such file or directory
--2021-01-03 23:39:27-- http://www.google.com/
Resolving http://www.google.com... failed: Unknown error.
WGET: unable to resolve host address 'www.google.com'

I get similar errors with lynx and ftp fails being unable to resolve the hostnames.

I was able to retrieve the 301 error for google using the IP address and able to ftp to my freeshell.org
site using the IP; so, it looks like I can access the network, but the DNS is unavailable.

Thank you for turning my attention to these issues.

- perl is intentionally disabled.
- the BIND resolver issue is solved.
