Ubuntu Linux

Ubuntu is getting pretty popular lately but I thought it would be a good idea to post some info.

Ubuntu Linux is a desktop linux based on Debian. I tried it 2 months ago and it has become, along with SuSE, my favourite Linux distro. Right now its the OS I use 90% of the time!

To all Linux newbies out there, this is a user-friendly distro. Installation is fast and easy, and install new software is easy thanks to Synaptic (GUI for Debian's apt-get). I found all kind of stuff in the database, including nVidia and ATI drivers for easy install of 3D acceleration. Videos and music play fine.

Note that the windows manager that comes with Ubuntu is Gnome. Some may not like that (as KDE is more powerful and "pretty"), but there is a project called Kubuntu that allows you to setup KDE by downloading all the files.

In my opinion is kde far too "pretty" and shiny. Gnome is more minimalistic and better aranged. I would never want to switch back from gnome to kde.

I'll probably install a copy of Ubuntu as soon as I get the new HDD.

Exactly, I like Gnome much more as well (I used it in SuSE too).

I am using Ubuntu for some time now, I tryed kubuntu too, but ah, left with gnome.. but later when I'll get my new hd, I am going to use gentoo.

Yeah I tried Kubuntu too, but it was no good. However for KDE lovers the new Debian stable is out. (yes it's true!). Personally I am used to Ubuntu, everything works, so I will not change for the time being.

Gentoo is nuts though, the concept is nice, but I don't think that a OS that takes 2 days to install suits me!

I am not Linux religious - usually I do not use fancy tools. I am pretty happy with an xterm, bash, mc, vi and a pine around, as long the network works.

I'll give a try and if the wlan works out of the box Ubuntu will get a new fan

ha-ha... it works. Not bad - this is what I call good start for Ubuntu.

One minor support question: is it possible to get root shell here? It asks for password - is there some default root password or I need to hack in into my new ubuntu?

This is a question after running ubunto for ca 10 minutes.

OK... it is solved as well - seems root password is disabled, but sudo allows password change (luckily).

Lol, thats like the first question of everyone that starts using Ubuntu!

I suggest you keep sudo though, Ubuntu is kind of build around it, I am not sure what problems may arise by enabling the root account. There might be none as well of course.
